Title IX Coordinator

The University of Wisconsin-Madison (University) prohibits discrimination in employment and all University programs and activities on a wide variety of grounds. Included are prohibitions of discrimination on the basis of sex, which includes prohibitions against sexual harassment. These prohibitions are included in University policies and procedures, s 36.12, Wisconsin Statutes, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, as amended. A summary of the laws and policies implemented by the University can be found at: http://www.oed.wisc.edu/laws.html.

The University has made available a wide variety of resources concerning sex discrimination and sexual harassment. An index of information on sexual harassment has been published by the Office for Equity and Diversity.

A pamphlet: Sexual Harassment: Defining and Addressing a Community Concern is available from the Office for Equity and Diversity at the address below as well as from the Office of the Provost.

A complaint procedure for individuals who believe that they have been discriminated against on the bases covered by the University including sex discrimination and sexual harassment has been established. The University’s procedures are described online.

Allegations of discrimination by students against other students, including sex discrimination and sexual harassment, should be directed to the Office of the Dean of Students (ODOS). The ODOS at their discretion may refer the matter to OED or handle it within the student judicial process. The ODOS can be contacted at:

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights enforces Title IX, which forbids discrimination in access to federally assisted educational programs. Generally this covers students, employees, and visitors to the campus involved in University sponsored educational programs or activities.

In addition to the Department of Education, allegations of sex discrimination including sexual harassment in University’s federally assisted educational programs can be filed with the Federal agency that provides the assistance to the program where the alleged discrimination occurred.
